Applebee's Restaurant Copycat Recipe
1 egg, beaten
1 cup fat free milk
1 cup flour
1 1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/8 teaspoon dried thyme
1/2 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons horseradish sauce
2 teaspoons catsup
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon dried oregano
dash of ground black pepper
Make the Dipping Sauce:
Combine all the dipping sauce ingredients into a small bowl. Cover and refrigerate until needed.
Make the Batter:
Wet ingredients. Combine the egg and milk in a medium bowl.
Dry ingredients. Combine the flour, salt, peppers, and thyme in another medium bowl.
Prepare the Onion:
Preheat oil in a deep fryer to 350 degrees. Cut about 3/4" off the top the of onion and remove the peel.
Cut into onion 12 to 16 vertical wedges but do not cut through bottom root end. Remove about 1 inch of petals from the center of the onion.
Dip the large flowered onion in the wet mixture, then into the dry mixture. Repeat the process.
Refrigerate the coasted onion for at least 15 minutes.
Fry the Onion:
Fry onion in hot oil for 10 minutes until golden brown.
Serve with the chilled dipping sauce.
